Message from
the President
Thank you for your interest in Healing
Arts Institute and a career in massage therapy, which has gained recognition
for being an important part of the healthcare profession. Massage therapy is a
growing occupation, gaining positive public attention, and offering many
possibilities in the fields of allied health and fitness. There are many
different specialty areas of massage that one can pursue, as well as a number of
settings in which to work. Examples of successful massage therapy settings
include medical offices, wellness programs within companies, hospice, private
practice, hospitals, resorts, cruise ships, day spas, fitness centers, hotels,
dance companies, and athletic teams.
In a recent survey conducted by the
American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA), “In July 2010, 40 percent of adult
Americans said they had at least one massage in the last five years to reduce
stress or relax—up from 22 percent reported in 2007 and twenty-nine (29)
percent of adult Americans who had a massage between July 2009 and July 2010
received it for medical or health reasons.” For those consumers surveyed in
2010 by the AMTA, fifty-four (54) percent say they’ve used massage therapy at
least one time for pain relief.
In the area of employment, according to the U.S.
Department of Labor in 2010, employment for massage therapists is expected to
increase 19 percent from 2008 to 2018, faster than average for all occupations
(U.S. Department of Labor,
Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook).
The
therapeutic benefits of massage continue to be researched and studied and
consumers seek massage because it provides numerous benefits. Documented recent
research has shown the effectiveness of massage for the following conditions:
cancer-related fatigue, low back pain, reducing post-operative pain, lowering
blood pressure, reducing headache frequency, boosting the body’s immune system
functioning, and easing alcohol withdrawal symptoms, to name a few.
Indeed, the future holds abundant
possibilities that are favorable to the field of massage therapy. We hope that
you decide to be a part of such a wonderful profession and thank you for
considering Healing Arts Institute.
Sincerely,
Jodi
